Nash Phono Preamplifier

by M2Tech

The Nash is a dedicated preamplifier and phono equalizer for each phono model. It features two phono inputs, one for low-level MC phono cartridges and one for medium-high level MC phono cartridges and MM phono cartridges.

Its totally discrete component circuit with J-FET input is characterized by very low background noise and high gain, allowing it to reach an output voltage of 2.5 Vrms with 5mV on MM and 170uV on MC. Passive RIAA is implemented with high-precision polypropylene capacitors.

The MC interface parameters (input impedance and MC pre-pre gain) are set via the potentiometer from the rear panel. The MM interface parameters (input impedance and capacitance load) are also set by dip-switches, again from the rear panel.

You can control the Nash with the front panel encoder and using the included infrared remote control. A menu allows you to set parameters such as: anti-noise filter, MM input gain, etc.

Two line-level auxiliary inputs make the Nash a hub or switching box for analog sources, an interesting plus when the Nash is used together with the Young MkIV or other equipment equipped with only one analog input, to take full advantage of the unique analog input available. A Young MkIV and Nash based system can have a total of four analogue sources: two phono and two high level (tuner, recorder…).

The noise and sound performance of the Nash can be further increased by replacing the included switching wall power supply with the M2Tech Van der Graaf MKII ultra-low noise power supply.

The first thing that struck me when I saw this phono preamp was its ability to handle both moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC) cartridges, as well as the possibility of configuring the parameters and controlling it via a 'app...
What caught my attention when I first saw this phono preamplifier was that it caters for both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, and has performance parameters and functions configurable and controllable with an Android app...

M2Tech is a name mainly linked to digital, if only for the historical importance of the famous USB > S/PDIF HiFace stick which introduced countless audiophiles to liquid music; this time we even have a phono stage, dedicated to Graham Nash...
The Nash is an accomplice in delivering a silent background through one's speakers, not only that it keeps the promise of a quite background as far as electrical noise is concerned....
I wondered how the Nash had allowed me to hear this when some other more costly phono stages had rendered the track with matter-of-fact, almost indifference....
In summary this phono preamp is excellent and I include it in the "must have" notebook....
